Join PAECT for our third annual Summer Gamification Book Club as we read Playing with Purpose by Michael Matera and John Meehan.

If the word gamification makes you think of giant game boards, complicated point systems, or a complete classroom makeover, this book is a refreshing alternative. As the authors write, “Instead of getting lost in the chaos, we’ll explore how to respond with purpose, flexibility, and a healthy dose of play.”

Our goal is not to add more to your plate. It’s to help you discover small, meaningful ways to bring engagement, choice, connection, and play into the learning experiences you already teach. That might be a team-building activity, a redesigned lesson, a reflection routine, or a simple classroom challenge.

This is a low-pressure, discussion-based book club.

  • Read the assigned chapters if you can.

  • Read only the sections that interest you if that works better.

  • Come with questions, ideas, examples, or simply curiosity.

  • Miss a week? Join the next one anyway.

Each meeting will focus on practical classroom takeaways so participants can leave with at least one idea they can try immediately as the new school year begins.

August is busy—we know. That’s why we’ve condensed the book club into three flexible sessions before school starts. Whether you attend one meeting or all three, you are welcome in the conversation.

Let’s make back-to-school season a little more playful, purposeful, and connected—together.
